The pickings have definitely not been slim this year as far as PC games are concerned. A huge number of titles have been released, with a particular emphasis this year on fantastic indie games and a re-emergence of the horror genre to huge appraisal from both critics and users.
Here’s a list of our favourites this year:
Resident Evil 7
This new sequel is a fantastic return to form for the Resident Evil franchise. You play in first person as you solve puzzles and fight monsters to try and save your wife from a terrifying, psychopathic family. This game isn’t for the faint-hearted, but if you’ve got the stomach for it you’ll love it.
Night in the Woods
This unusual but fantastic indie game tackles some big issues like mental health and responsibility however offsets it with a hilarious dialogue and beautiful artwork. The concept of wandering round your home town all day may seem boring, but it’s anything but, as it’s the tiny day to day events that make this game a heartwarming, immersive experience.
Prey
Hugely satisfying combat, new mind control abilities and the many futuristic ways you can just blow everything up make this a fantastic sci-fi title. Prey retains the atmosphere of the classic original however improves on every single aspect of its predecessor.
Hollow Night
The biggest draw to this platformer is the utter beauty of your surroundings as you battle through the underworld realm of Hallownest. The huge 2D map contains hundreds of secrets that could keep you playing for hours and the indie vibe feels novel and original.
Wolfstein 2: The New Colossus
All the fantastic elements of the original Wolfstein game but ramped up a notch, this game is a massive improvement on an already hugely popular title. The eerie, terrifying villains and the plucky protagonist make this a really satisfying experience that mixes a bone-chilling Nazi plotline with hilarious jokes.
Bayonetta
Nearly eight years after its original release, Bayonetta has finally made it to PC, and it’s been well worth the wait. The PC version has all the fantastic hack and slash elements of the original but handles it with ease; with smooth, stable framerates and a fluid gameplay.
Fifa 2018
The 2017 reboot of Fifa continues to improve upon the beauty and mechanics of this already fabulously presented game. The new version includes huge updates on the single player “The Journey” mode, taking you to far flung places with new challenges.
Cuphead
This fantastic run and gun indie game would make the list based on its artwork alone. A 1930’s cartoon vibe is mixed with an equally fantastic soundtrack to make this an immersive (and slightly creepy) experience that you won’t forget anytime soon. Be warned though, it’s really, really hard.
Divinity: Original Sin 2
The makers of this fantastic sequel have committed hard to improving character development and dialogue; and it really pays off, making the experience so much more captivating. The artwork and the gameplay are both a huge improvement on an already very good original.
Battlefield 1
The newest game in this already sensational first person shooter franchise takes its classic theatrical large scale warfare to the next level. The multiplayer mode is where Battlefield really hits its stride with balanced combat and chaotic surroundings, making it a fantastic game to play with friends.
